Its been a long time since Hoochie Mamas have had any respect. We loved them back in the day, with their hot pink biking shorts, tough girl hi-tops, bamboo earrings and bubble gum snapping. They ruled our lives and our style from 1987-1992 and we're so excited that Jules Kim has paid homage to them by reinterpreting the best of their style into high end accessories with her four year old jewelry line Bijules. One half of the notoriously hot Kim twins, Jules brings the gangster elements of the old New York (lord knows that time has passed) and makes them into sleek, beautiful accent pieces that " hang, hug, clip, cut, and curve" as she says. Her clients include indie fashion icons like MIA, Peaches, Santogold and Spankrock to America's sweethearts Eve, Janet Jackson, Rihanna, and Gwen Stefani.
Her latest hit is this season's golden serpent nail rings and hairrings(earrings made of hair), which have been picked up by Downtown's hottest style makers, and are currently being sold from Crywolf in New York to Colette in Paris. The inspiration for her next collection came during a flight over the Atlantic on recent trip to Paris. "There was an old classic movie showing on the plane called Arsenic and Old Lace. The title was amazing. It made me think of death, control, sex and everything female." In short, she created a line of intimate jewelry from the idea. "Wearing lingerie as jewelry is something I think women can do now. Overexpose what you underwear."
Expect to see her expose an even newer collection of Bijules during Paris Fashion Week this Fall, followed by curated installments in Vienna and Frankfurt. If you want to see the gorgeous designer in person, you can find her on the streets of the Lower, Lower, Lower East Side and at her monthly party "Korrupt" at the end of every month at 88 East Broadway. A girl's gotta dance.
