Locals know: there are so many innovative stores Downtown that it is sometimes hard to decide where to shop for one-of-a-kind pieces. But there is a store tucked away on a one-block street that’s different. The store is called No. 6, named after its address on Center Market Place on the Nolita/Soho border. The store carries a vintage collection acquired from England, Paris and the States that is so well edited it’s hard to walk out empty-handed.
Three years ago, vintage dealer Morgan Yakus and stylist Karin Bereson opened up what is now one of the most influential stores in Downtown New York. The duo has carried long careers in fashion. Yakus sold her vintage collection in London's famed Portobello Market while Bereson was a successful stylist before the two crossed paths again and decided to go into business for themselves. To keep things fresh, Duncan Hamilton, an artist and curator, re-does the store’s interior each season.
It’s not only every stylist's dream closet; they also have the fortune of benefiting from Bereson's background in fashion styling as No. 6 offers studio services for a fee. There is a vintage archive for designer inspiration, tailoring for garments that are purchased in the store for a fee, stylist rentals, and personal shopping. They also boast a roster of celebrity fans, but the 6 girls are discreet and low-key. It’s the first time we’ve ever heard someone from the fashion world say, "We don’t reveal our celebrity clients," as that phrase is usually preserved for plastic surgeons and rehab counselors.
A more recent incarnation of the style haven has resulted in an in-house label, No. 6 Collection. The collection is a line of vintage-inspired dresses made from silks and other thoughtful fabrics so unique that Barney's picked it up for the New York store.
Make sure you check out the new designs from Danish designers Henrik Vibskov and Stine Goya, French clothiers Burfitt and Madame a Paris, Belgium’s Stephan Schneider and Christian Wijnants, and a selection of Italian shoes from Q.S.P. and Collection Privee.
